The great-nephew of Brigitte Macron, the first lady of France, was allegedly attacked with a political motive and is now in the hospital.
According to his father, anti-government protestors attacked Jean-Baptiste Trogneux on Monday night in front of the renowned Trogneux chocolate shop in Amiens, northern France.
The attackers, who called out "the president, his wife, and our family" before fleeing, repeatedly struck the 30-year-old in the head, arms, and legs, according to his father Jean-Alexandre Trogneux.
'They've crossed the line. I'm flabbergasted,' he added, saying his son was being checked by a doctor and was awaiting the results of a brain scan.
After the attack, which occurred at around 8:00 p.m. (1800 GMT) on Monday, May 15—shortly after President Macron had appeared for an interview on the nation's primary TV news program—local police reported that they had detained eight persons.
According to a local police source, the six men and two women were still being held in custody on Tuesday and are accused of gang violence, assault, and occasionally actual physical harm.
About 40 protesters showed up, according to Jean-Alexandre Trogneux, following the president's statement on TF1.
